Collecting litter with elementary schools
To tackle the litter problem in Hollands Kroon, the municipality of Hollands Kroon commissioned us to develop: the 'Operatie Z.U.I.V.E.R.' app. In the app, schools compete against each other and players are encouraged to keep their neighborhoods clean of trash. Sort of like Pokémon go, but for collecting litter.
Players of the app can 'conquer areas' in the municipality of Hollands Kroon by cleaning up litter. There is also a competition element to the game, where schools compete against each other in the fight against litter. In this way, Operatie Z.U.I.V.E.R. is not only an innovative way to make young people aware of litter, but it is also an app that creates social involvement.
The information collected by the app is of great value to the municipality of Hollands Kroon. For example, it provides insight into where which types of litter are found. During the pilot phase 879 users collected a total of 6431 pieces of litter, an average of 7.3 pieces per user. A great result showing that the game is played intensively! It is expected that the app will be rolled out within other municipalities in 2022. In the review sections of the Google Play store and the Apple app store one can already read that users would also like to see the app in areas outside Hollands Kroon.
