Children learn about the dangers and opportunities of digital media. Serious game for a serious topic.
In 2021 we were asked to develop a new version of MediaMasters, a national serious game for elementary school commissioned by Netwerk Mediawijsheid, the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Children learn about the dangers and opportunities of (digital) media. Serious topic for a serious game.
MediaMasters is the national serious game about the opportunities and dangers of (digital) media. Every year during the Week of Media Literacy, a national game is organized where grade 7 and 8 students use MediaMasters to learn about important issues such as social media, privacy and Artificial Intelligence. MediaMasters is played five class days in class.
Together with the MediaMasters team, we tailored the updated elaboration to the wishes and needs of the very varied target groups: accessible for teachers, challenging for students, flexible for (content) managers and administrators. In six months time MediaMasters has been completely renewed in design and technology, so we have arrived at a sustainable and future-proof solution with which MediaMasters can continue to grow in the coming years, towards more elementary school and new target groups.
The game we developed has already broken records two years in a row and was played by >160,000 students in 2021 and a whopping >180,000 in 2022. Teachers gave the new game a rating of 8.3 (and a big compliment). On the final day, 20,000 students simultaneously answered 100 questions per second. Another record. MediaMasters was also featured in the Youth News for the second year in a row. Project successful, on to next year!
