The national serious game MediaMasters delivered a record-breaking year in 2025. In the fifth year of our collaboration with Netwerk Mediawijsheid, more students, schools and teachers participated than ever before.

During the Week of Media Literacy, primary school students across the Netherlands engage in a playful competition to become more media literate. Classes work on current topics such as fake news, online behaviour, privacy and AI. In 2025, this resulted in a record number of participants:

  • 290,000+ students (grades 5–8, special and mainstream education)
  • 13,000+ teachers
  • 3,500+ schools

Compared to last year, the number of participants grew by over 10%. Since our first edition in 2021, this represents a total growth of more than 80%.

A strong result in the fifth year of our collaboration, underlining the power of the joint approach and confirming MediaMasters’ position as one of the most impactful educational serious games in the Netherlands.

The #1 media-wise class of 2025

Once again, students from across the country took on the challenge of becoming the most media-wise class in the Netherlands. The title went to Grade 8 of IKC St. Vitus in Winschoten (mainstream education) and Kindcentrum De Marel in Goes (special education).

On behalf of the entire DTT team: congratulations!

Tens of thousands of simultaneous players – 100% uptime

The scale at which MediaMasters is played is unique: thousands of classrooms spread across the country, with clear peak moments in usage. The strong growth in 2025 called for the next step in technology. That is why DTT developed a completely new server architecture this year — scalable, future-proof and designed to handle extreme peak traffic. The new setup proved itself during the final week, when tens of thousands of students played simultaneously and the platform processed peaks of over 1,000 interactions per second. Throughout the entire edition — from the first Media Missions to the final day and award ceremony — MediaMasters remained stable and reliably available nationwide.

Looking ahead to MediaMasters 2026

With a record number of players, a solid technical foundation and positive feedback from schools and teachers, 2025 forms a strong basis for the future. In 2026, Netwerk Mediawijsheid and DTT will continue to build on MediaMasters: innovative in content, robust in technology, and focused on making media literacy accessible to even more students across the Netherlands.
